What is a word? What is a sentence? What is considered a valuable piece of work in literature? Writing is an art. Therefore you must first define art to understand the true value of writing.
Defining the word “art” is like defining the word “God”. Everyone has their own ideas and opinions. Art is anything that you can imagine. Anything that you can see, hear, smell, or touch is art. Anything that you can do is art. Art is a butterfly sitting on a leaf. Art is a pencil and calculator sitting on a desk. Art is the sound of the waves crashing on the shore, or the smell of Lemon Myrtle. Art is whatever you want to call “art”. Most people consider art to be a drawing or painting of some sort, by someone with good talent in the structure of the drawing. But in reality, the real artist is the one who draws a straight line on a page and sees a masterpiece in his mind.
The same is to writing. Anyone can write. Many people excel in their ability to structure a sentence properly in High School. Many go on to learn how to structure an entire essay or research paper. Many people write books. With today’s education standards, only a limited amount of people know how to write properly. But how do you determine one’s writing ability? The ability of a writer can be determined by that persons’ imagination, artistic thinking, and creativity. Those are the key elements in writing anything.
You have to make your audience feel welcome, otherwise they will leave. So, bring them into the writing. Make them feel at home. In writing on a particular topic, you must have a general idea of what you want to say, then go for it. Go for it just like you would think it all out in your head. There’s no better way to get inside your audiences’ head than to write it as YOU think it. Make the reader feel like it all slowly comes together as it’s being thought out. This process will captivate them and bring them to that next paragraph.
Treat an article of writing like a new date. You must always get somewhat personal with the reader. Move in slowly. You don’t want to scare the audience away. Be down to Earth and express yourself very clearly. If something is exciting, make it sound phenomenally exciting. Build the excitement. If something is boring, then, it’s just going to have to sound boring.
Finally, to truly determine you writing ability, you have to ask yourself whether or not the thoughts were your own, and what triggered them. Writing what you’re thinking is a work of art. Everyone thinks a little differently than the next person, and to share what you thought, in the words that you thought them in, is true writing ability.
