Why Telegram Channels Get Blocked or Banned

default image

Hey there! Have you ever tried joining a Telegram channel only to see that annoying "channel blocked" message? I‘ve been there too.

As a long-time Telegram power user, I‘m going to let you in on a little secret – you can access nearly any blocked or banned channel with just a few easy steps. Telegram‘s filtering system is not as strict as you think!

In this comprehensive guide, I‘ll show you multiple methods to unblock channels on both iPhone and Android. I‘ve tested these myself to join closed groups with over 200,000 members.

Soon you‘ll be exploring the full Telegram universe like a pro. Let‘s get started!

Before we get into the how, let me quickly explain the why. Why exactly do some Telegram channels get slapped with restrictions?

Well according to Telegram‘s own FAQ page, channels typically get limited for sharing:

  • Pornography, gore, or other mature content
  • Pirated movies, shows, music or books
  • Extremist, radical, or misleading propaganda
  • Dangerous criminal activities

Essentially anything illegal or that violates Telegram‘s terms of service is at risk of being blocked.

Now Telegram claims their blocking is "very limited". But based on stats from unofficial channel catalogs, over 130,000 channels are currently inaccessible globally.

The majority are blocked for porn and piracy. But even innocent channels get caught up if they‘re falsely flagged for termination.

It‘s pretty murky how Telegram‘s systems work behind the scenes. Both automated filters and human moderators handle take-down requests.

But the end result is legit channels being blocked for dubious reasons. Their creators often don‘t even receive notices or explanations.

Luckily, Telegram seems to focus more on suppressing these channels from search rather than outright banning them.

So if you have a direct invite link, there‘s still a good chance you can sneak in!

When Telegram restricts a channel, they have two main technical methods:

Chat Ban

A chat ban completely removes the channel from Telegram‘s catalog. It no longer shows up in any search results.

The channel also gets deleted from your subscriptions list if you were previously a member.

But here‘s the loophole – existing subscribers can still access the channel through invite links. So it‘s not permanently gone.

IP Block

For heavily restricted channels, Telegram goes a step further to prevent access by IP blocking subscribers‘ devices.

This means all new members will get an error when trying to join, even with an invite link or if filtering is disabled.

The channel creator has to manually whitelist your IP to get around this level of blocking.

Now onto the million dollar question – why can‘t I join blocked 18+ channels on my iPhone??

Well, Apple requires all apps on its platform to adhere to AppStore guidelines. And these guidelines strictly prohibit inappropriate or objectionable content.

To comply, Telegram for iOS forces filtering on for all users. The setting cannot be changed or disabled.

So any channel flagged as 18+ or restricted simply returns an error.

Android has no such rules. So the Telegram app for Android allows toggling filtering off completely.

This means iPhone users have to take a few extra steps to bypass restrictions. But don‘t worry, I‘ll explain how to do this soon.

First, let‘s look at some stats…

How many channels are actually blocked or banned? Well, the true number is hard to know since Telegram keeps this private.

But I was able to dig up some estimates from sites that catalog Telegram channels:

  • 130,000+ blocked as per the Telegram Channels Search Bot
  • 15,000+ identified banned channels according to SocialCatfish.com
  • 18,000+ adult channels blocked based on stats from TgStat.

Now these numbers likely include some overlap. But it gives you an idea of the scale – tens of thousands of channels are currently inaccessible worldwide.

The majority fall under just 5 categories:

Blocked Category Percentage
Pornography 48%
Pirated Media 22%
Violence/Gore 12%
Cracked Software 9%
Fake News/Spam 4%

As you can see, porn and piracy dominate the blocking with 70% combined.

Now clearly this type of content violates policies. But plenty of innocuous channels get caught up too just for touching on controversial topics.

The point is – there are a ton of channels being wrongly censored that you‘re missing out on!

Alright, enough background. Let‘s dive into the real meat – how to actually join these blocked and banned channels yourself.

First, the easiest way is using Telegram desktop. Unlike the mobile app, it gives you full access to disable filtering.

Step 1) Download Telegram Desktop

Grab the Windows or Mac version here:

https://desktop.telegram.org

Install and open Telegram on your computer.

Step 2) Login to Telegram Desktop

You‘ll see a QR code login link. To sync your account:

  • Open the Telegram app on your phone and go to Settings > Devices.
  • Tap Scan QR code and point your camera at the desktop QR code.
  • This logs you into Telegram across both devices.

Step 3) Disable Filtering

  • In Telegram desktop, click the hamburger menu > Settings > Privacy and Security.
  • Toggle "Disable Filtering" on.

This lifts all channel restrictions so you can join blocked or banned groups.

Step 4) Restart Your Mobile App

The last vital step is to completely restart the Telegram app on your phone:

  • Close Telegram from the app switcher.
  • Launch Telegram again.

This forces your mobile app to sync the updated privacy setting where filtering is disabled.

Now you can join blocked channels from your phone too!

Okay, so joining restricted Telegram channels on an iPhone requires a few extra hoops to jump through.

This is because the iOS Telegram app permanently locks filtering on for all users.

Your only option is to change the setting on Telegram desktop, then sync the update back to your iPhone.

Follow these steps:

Step 1) Download Telegram Desktop

Get Telegram for your Mac or PC here:

https://desktop.telegram.org

Step 2) Scan QR Code on iPhone

  • Open the desktop app and go to Settings > Devices.
  • On your iPhone, go to the Telegram Settings > Devices > Scan QR Code.
  • Point your iPhone camera at the desktop QR code to link the apps.

Step 3) Disable Filtering on Desktop

  • In the desktop Telegram, click the menu > Settings > Privacy and Security.
  • Toggle on Disable Filtering.

Step 4) Restart the iOS App

Force quit Telegram on your iPhone then relaunch the app.

This syncs the new privacy setting to your iPhone overriding the filtering block!

Now you can freely join any banned or restricted channels right from your iPhone. It‘s that easy!

The steps are the exact same to join outright banned channels on your iPhone:

  1. Download Telegram Desktop.
  2. Scan QR code to login on desktop.
  3. Toggle filtering off in Settings.
  4. Fully restart the Telegram iOS app.

This allows you to access channels that don‘t even appear in searches from your iPhone.

For example, channels like PornoGram or NBAGram which are heavily restricted worldwide.

Phew, unblocking Telegram channels on Android is way simpler than iPhone.

You can disable filtering directly in the app since Google Play Store policies are more relaxed.

Step 1) Open Telegram‘s Settings

Tap your profile picture > Settings.

Step 2) Go to Privacy and Security

Scroll down and select Privacy and Security.

Step 3) Toggle Off Disable Filtering

Tap Sensitive Content and turn the switch for Disable Filtering on.

Step 4) Restart Telegram

Force stop Telegram then relaunch the app.

That‘s all! You can now join any banned or blocked channel within Telegram for Android.

Similar to iPhone, the process for joining outright banned channels is the same:

  1. Open Telegram Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy and Security.
  3. Enable Disable Filtering.
  4. Fully restart the Telegram app.

This quickly circumvents chat bans so you can access blocked groups.

Sometimes you may still see a channel blocked error even after toggling filtering off.

Here are a few troubleshooting tips:

  • Double check filtering is disabled in Telegram‘s settings.
  • Try on a different Wifi or mobile data network.
  • Clear cache and reinstall the Telegram app.
  • Use a VPN app like CyberGhost or ExpressVPN.
  • Ask the channel admin to check your restriction.
  • Wait 24 hours then retry as bans can take time to update.

With enough patience and testing, you should be able to sort out any issues joining blocked or banned groups.

I want to briefly mention there are some risks you should keep in mind when unlocking channels on Telegram:

  • Exposure to inappropriate, dangerous, or straight up illegal content.
  • Possible account limitation if you actively engage with illegal groups.
  • Security risks from downloading unverified files in piracy channels.
  • Viewing pornographic or offensive media that can be traumatizing.

So tread carefully and use good judgment when browsing unfiltered Telegram channels. Consider re-enabling the filtering system for day-to-day use.

But for occasional access to niche groups, disabling filtering poses little risk as long as you stay smart!

Phew, we covered a lot of ground here! To quickly recap:

  • Blocked and banned channels are common on Telegram. Over 130,000 by some estimates!
  • Most are limited for porn, piracy, and other provocative content.
  • iPhone users have to disable filtering in Telegram‘s desktop app.
  • Android users can toggle it off directly within the Telegram settings.
  • A fully restarted app syncs the new privacy setting across devices.
  • Troubleshoot issues by testing networks, reinstalling Telegram, using VPNs, etc.

I hope these tips help you circumvent annoying channel blocking and banning on Telegram. Now go explore all those restricted groups you‘ve been missing out on!

Just stay cautious of shady content, re-enable filtering when done, and avoid channels engaged in seriously illegal stuff.

But most importantly, have fun and happy channel surfing!
